As members of the Midlands Kite Fliers, we are all committed to flying safely and to do everything we can to promote kite flying in general and our club in particular. We are all bound by our Constitution but that is mostly about how we run the Club. These rules are about how we conduct ourselves.

  1. These rules apply to all Members of the Midlands Kite Fliers (the Club) irrespective of their type of membership, all of whom will be referred to as members in the Rules.
  2. Each member of Midlands Kite Fliers agrees to fly according to the Club’s Rules and Code of Practice for Safe Kite Flying which may be amended by the Club Committee from time to time. Any amendment will be ratified at the next Annual General Meeting.
  3. Every person wishing to fly under the Club’s insurance must be listed in the membership list. They will be listed by their type of membership and must follow these Rules.
  4. Every member must accept full responsibility for their actions and must encourage and assist others to fly safely at all times. They must do all they can to ensure safety on the flying field or anywhere where they are, or could be, viewed as being members of the Club.
  5. Members must at act with courtesy and consideration to other kite fliers and members of the public at all times when they are flying with the club, flying as members of the Club or could reasonably be associated with the Club.
  6. Members must assist anyone nominated by the Club’s Committee to ensure that events run by, for or with the Club are as safe as possible. They must bring any hazards to the attention of the person nominated as soon as possible. If the hazard presents an immediate risk of injury they must do what they can to reduce the risk without putting themselves in danger, bu if injuries happen and do you need an injury lawyer that will get you the compensation you deserve you can go online to find the best options for this. Members must assist those nominated with local knowledge where they have this.
  7. Members will take all possible steps to comply with the current Air Navigation Order and any statute, order or byelaw.

In accordance with the Rules of the Air Navigation Order members must not:

  1. Fly a kite more than 30 metres above the ground within 5 kilometres of an airfield.
  2. Take-off and landing flight paths should be avoided
  3. Fly a kite more than 60 metres above the ground at any other time unless permission has been obtained form the Civil Aviation Authority and the certificate of such authority is available on site
  4. Drop items from kites unless proper authority has been given in accordance with the Order

For Safe flying members should:

  1. Avoid flying near power lines
  2. Avoid flying near and over roads, railways, footpaths, canals or rivers
  3. Avoid flying in low cloud, fog or whenever the kite cannot be seen clearly
  4. Avoid flying in severe weather including thunderstorms and heavy rain.
  5. Fly away from members of the public, animals, trees, buildings, masts or structures or in any other place where a fast descending kite could cause loss or damage or where an entangled kite could be difficult to retrieve
  6. Fly within the capabilities of the equipment and the flyer, taking due consideration of anything that might effect the safe use of the equipment.
  7. Members tethering kites must ensure their kites are attended at all times.
  8. Members must ensure all equipment is in good condition and that it is fit for the purpose to which it is being put and fit for the conditions in which it is being used.
  9. The flying site must be left clean, tidy and free of discarded line or equipment.
  10. Children must be supervised at all times.
  11. Take care of your own health and safety – gloves must be worn when appropriate and other protective equipment may need to be used.
  12. Kite traction (buggying, kite jumping, kite towed water sports, kite boarding rollerblading etc) carry particular risks. Suitable protective equipment must be worn. Kite traction should only be undertaken where it is safe and legal to do so and where there is no risk of injury or loss to third parties.
  13. Ensure that your insurance is suitable for the activities you are undertaking: (the Club Insurance may not cover you for all kite flying activities).
  14. Ensure that you have received appropriate training for any kite you are flying, particularly for kite traction.
  15. Learn to fly on smaller and/or slower kites before progressing to larger/faster kites – always fly within your capabilities
  16. Make sure you fly with consideration for other fliers as well as spectators, pedestrians, children and animals.
  17. Do not fly noisy kites when this might be an annoyance to others.
  18. Never let inexperienced fliers use your equipment except under close supervision and provided that you are certain that they can handle the equipment without risk of injury to themselves or others.
  19. If you are flying kite traction, and you are in a head on collision course, alter your course to the right. Watch for pilots coming from the right and change course to avoid them. Pilots coming towards you from your left should alter course to avoid you. Look before you gybe/tack and if necessary call a warning before making the manoeuvre. When passing another kite, the downwind flier must lower their kite and the upwind raise their kite to avoid a collision.
  20. And finally – never attach yourself permanently to a kite!
